Moncton Stands Out at the MNB Awards Gala

Moncton artists were big winners this past weekend at the 2013 Prix Music/Musique Awards Gala.

The gala took place at the beautiful Imperial Theatre in uptown Saint John. The lobby was packed as nominees, industry professionals and fans either held into their ticket or a beer from the bar. Many people were already networking, taking full advantage of the event.

The night got underway at 8pm with a performance from fiddler Samantha Robichaud. She won two awards: Collaborative Musician of the Year and Educator of the Year.

Moncton rockers, The Motorleague, won five awards including Anglophone Recording of the Year for their latest album Acknowledge, Acknowledge and SOCAN Song of the Year for the album’s single, “North America.”

The four-piece weren’t at the gala because of a cross-Canada tour, extending to some U.S. dates. Lynn Daigle of Malkin Music accepted the awards on the band’s behalf (Music Industry Professional of the Year).

Giving the gala their dose of loud rock was a performance from Moncton’s Les Hôtesses d’Hilaire, nominated for  Recording of the Year (Francophone). They lost this award to fellow Monctonians, Les Hay Babies, for their EP Le Folio.

Indie-folk’s Les Hay Babies were also not at the awards, but had member Vivianne Roy’s mother accept on the trio’s behalf. The trio won six awards including Choix du Public and Chanson SOCAN de l’année.

Shaun LeBlanc won both Solo Recording of the Year for his first full-length recording, Kaleidoscope, and Emerging Artist of the Year. Also from Moncton, LeBlanc’s following is extending beyond the province.

With great gala performances from Ryan LeBlanc, Jessica Rhaye, Andy Brown, In Dreams, Danny Boudreau, among others, the evening was diverse, enjoyable and ended too quickly.
