The recent cold weather and frost in the city has proven that winter is coming quickly. A less harsh warning is the Shivering Songs festival initial line up announcement.

This year, the festival will take place from Thursday, January 23 to Sunday, January 26. The festival brings quiet music to beautiful, intimate venues, using the Wilmot Church as their main stage.

The initial line up includes Juno-nominated songstress Kathleen Edwards, who’s topped the Billboard charts, collaborated with artists like Bryan Adams and Bon Iver, and all four of her albums have been nominated for Juno Awards. She’ll be performing with power couple John K. Samson and Christine Fellows.

Samson, front-man for The Weakerthans, is one of Canada’s most beloved songwriters. His partnet, Christine Fellows, is an avid interdisciplinary artist, is well known for her ethereal and highly acclaimed works, scores and spectacles.

Also announced was a songwriter’s circle hosted by Steve Poltz. Poltz has earned a reputation both for legendary live shows and otherworldly song writing – Jewel’s timeless “You Were Meant For Me” is only the first on his long of hits.

This year’s festival guest author is Dave Bidini (Rheostatics, BidiniBand). Bidini’s published a number of books on music, sports and travel including Tropic of Hockey, The Best Game You Can Name and, his latest, Home and Away: The Story of the 2008 Homeless World Cup. Bidini is the only Canadian to have been nominated for a Genie, Gemini, Juno as well as CBC’s “Canada Reads.”

Part of Fredericton FROSTival, Shivering Songs began in 2011 when the New Brunswick chamber-folk group, The Olympic Symphonium, curated a weekend of music in their hometown of Fredericton as a way of celebrating their third album.

The overwhelming success of the inaugural Shivering Songs festival made it apparent there was a demand for folk music in beautiful, quiet settings around the heart of Fredericton, and the band decided to make it an annual event.

The 2014 Shivering Songs festival will take place at Wilmot United Church, the Fredericton Boyce Farme’s Market, the Capital Complex and the Cedar Tree Cafe. The team has more up their sleeves, so stay tuned for updates.
